Apple Watch Not Charging? 9 Fixes That Actually Work

You put your Apple Watch on the charger, walk away and come back to a battery that has not moved. Most of the time an Apple Watch not charging is caused by something simple – dirt, alignment, the power source or a software hiccup. Work through these fixes in order.

First: how to tell if your Apple Watch is charging

When charging starts, the watch shows a green lightning bolt icon. If you see a red lightning bolt, the battery is very low and needs time on the charger before it turns on – leave it for at least 30 minutes before trying anything else.

1. Check the power source

Plug the charger into a wall outlet using a working power adapter. USB ports on laptops, monitors and power strips can go to sleep or deliver too little power. Try a different outlet to rule it out.

2. Remove any plastic film

New Apple Watches and chargers come with protective film on both sides. Even a thin layer left on the charger or the back of the watch can stop charging completely.

3. Clean the back of the watch and the charger

Sweat, skin oils, lotion and dust build up on the back crystal and the charging surface. Wipe both with a soft, lint-free cloth. If needed, lightly dampen the cloth with fresh water, then dry everything before charging again.

4. Make sure the watch is properly aligned

The magnets should pull the watch into the center of the charger. If the charger is lying loose, tilted on a cable or sliding around, the watch can end up slightly off-center and charge slowly or not at all. Set the charger on a flat, stable surface – or fix it in a stand – and place the watch on top.

5. Take the watch off the band if the band is in the way

Some thick or rigid bands keep the watch from sitting flat on the charger. Open the band fully, or test once with the band removed.

6. Restart or force restart your Apple Watch

A normal restart fixes many software glitches. If the watch does not respond, force a restart: press and hold the side button and the Digital Crown together for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Then put it back on the charger.

7. Try a different cable and adapter

Cables wear out, especially near the connector. Test with another Apple Watch charger and a different adapter. Use chargers from Apple or certified "Made for Apple Watch" accessories – cheap uncertified pucks are a common cause of problems.

8. Check the temperature and "charging on hold" messages

If the watch gets too warm, it may pause charging to protect the battery. Move it out of direct sunlight, off soft surfaces like beds and away from other hot electronics, and let it cool down. Also note that Optimized Battery Charging can deliberately hold the battery at 80% for a while – that is normal behavior.

9. Update watchOS, then contact Apple

Make sure your watch and iPhone run the latest software. If nothing works, contact Apple Support – there may be an issue with the battery or charging coil that needs service.

Prevent charging problems in the first place

Many "not charging" moments start with a loose charger: it slides off the nightstand, the cable gets bent, or the watch is dropped on half-aligned in the dark. Giving the charger a fixed, stable spot removes most of these everyday issues.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Apple Watch not charging even though it is on the charger?

The most common causes are a dirty back crystal or charger, protective film left on, poor alignment, a weak power source or a software glitch. Clean both surfaces, use a wall adapter and force restart the watch.

What does the red lightning bolt on Apple Watch mean?

A red lightning bolt means the battery is very low. Leave the watch on the charger for at least 30 minutes; it will turn on when it has enough charge.

Why does my Apple Watch stop charging at 80%?

This is usually Optimized Battery Charging, which learns your routine and delays charging past 80% to reduce battery wear. It will finish charging before you normally take the watch off the charger.
